Black Lacquer Screen with Gilt Chrysanthemums

A four-panel screen in black lacquer, each arched panel painted with drifts of gilt and pale chrysanthemums rising from the lower rail, finished with fine gold line borders and pierced brass hinges. The lacquer has crazed and rubbed in places and the gilding has softened with age. Dramatic from across a room, and rewarding at close range, which is the mark of a good screen.
